Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport Nears October Opening

A Significant Milestone in Cambodia’s Development Journey

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, a colossal project by Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co Ltd (AIAI), is nearing completion. Under the leadership of Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol, the main construction work has been successfully concluded. The airport, along with the 24.5km “Airport Highway,” is expected to open on October 16, becoming a pivotal gateway to Cambodia.

Promising Plans for Enhanced Connectivity

Adding to the excitement surrounding the new airport is the government’s exploration of a light-rail line connecting Siem Reap town to the airport. This proposed transportation solution could not only reduce traffic congestion but also offer a sustainable mode of travel for both locals and tourists. The Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter chairman, Thourn Sinan, has enthusiastically endorsed the idea, recognizing its potential to boost tourism and support the Kingdom’s development journey.

Envisioning the Future for Growth and Capacity

A 4E Category Airport with Expansive Capacity

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is poised to operate as a 4E category airport, boasting 38 gates and the capability to handle large passenger planes such as the Airbus A-340-300, A350-900, Boeing B777-200/300ER, and B747-300/400. In its initial phase, the airport is expected to accommodate approximately 58,000 flights and serve seven million passengers annually. Projections for the years 2030 to 2040 indicate a substantial increase, with 86,000 flights and 10.5 million passengers expected.

A Potential Hub for Trade and Commerce

Covering an extensive area of 700.06 hectares, the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport project is a joint venture co-owned by Yunnan Investment Group (76.6%), Yunnan Construction Group (20%), and Yunnan Airport Group (3.4%). With a significant investment revision from $880 million in 2019 to $1.100 billion in 2022, the airport’s three phases are poised to make it a key player in Cambodia’s trade and commerce sector.

The impending completion of the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport stands as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to developing a world-class transportation infrastructure. The potential addition of a light-rail line offers an opportunity to further enhance connectivity and promote sustainable travel.
